Work buff, nope, we desperately need an escape Planning for the next adventure began in the first day of the week (0716). The original plan was to get cozy and be romantic in Tagaytay. We look for the cheapest hotel; one cost Php 1,900+ which was fine with our budgeted trip for Php 4,000 but the problem was that the hotel is too far from Tagaytay’s main point. We again try to find another hotel, any inn located in the place’s main attraction ” Taal Volcano - but its price is way too high. We did our research on hotels until the middle of the week drops. None. We are tensed.Fourth day of the week when my Koko suggested that we should have a cruise, in Corregidor! I got excited for the reason that this will be our first cruise together. One and a half hour cruise! Great!
We added a bulk of coins from our budgeted savings for our added activities and bliss. But tell you, everything was worth it.
Here was our chosen package:
Php 1,690.00 per head includes:
Roundtrip ferry transfers Shrine,
Entrance and terminal fees
Guided island tour
One buffet lunch
Accommodation
Buffet Lunch w/ welcome drink
For add on activities we have chosen the Regular (Php 350.00 per head; sunset/sunrise viewing, night lateral tour, easy hike) and Wellness (Php 350.00 per head; full body massage).
Day One Time: 5:00 am; Where: Room
Three hours of sleep was enough with someone who was so excited to wake up as early as possible. Two big bites of ‘pan de sal’ with cheese to fill my tommy tummy. Thirty minutes of bath can already assure my restless body that I’ll still look as fresh as if I have taken my one hour dip. Ten minutes to get ready. Two minutes, I’m out of the house.
Time: 6:30 am; Where: MRT Taft
Station On our meeting place, I arrived at exactly 6:20 am. That was too early for the 6:30 am ‘kitakits’ with my Koko. Suddenly, there, not one and a quarter meters away, a frowning chap already caught my attention. He looked at me as if I committed a crime. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that is the love of my life who looks so irritated early in the morning. “Hey, I am not late! I arrived here ten minutes earlier”, were the words that were protesting inside my head. I was expecting for a kiss on my pinkish cheek but he didn’t. “What?” .
My crime: Was not able to send an sms informing him that I am on my way. Oh well, as you can see, these were one of our familiar, usual scenes when we meet up. We’ll get over it and cuddle after a minute and thirty seconds, I thought.
Time: 6:45 am to 8:17 am
We rode a cab going to Terminal A CCP Complex Roxas Boulevard. From there, the woman in cashier (sorry, forgot to ask her name) issued us tickets and the assurance that we availed everything that we worked out in the fifth day of the week. While waiting for the stewards to signal us that we should board the vessel, we have already made a hundred clicks.
It was already 7:30 am; first step inside the big boat was way too much of an excitement. Our seat was C24 and C25, C stands for center (that was a guess).
Exploring the 1st to the 2nd deck of the boat was like a kid who experienced riding the first carousel. It was my fourth time to cruise actually, but the feeling was just the same when you had your first.
The early morning coffee and hot choco can boost our mood, sadly, their coffee wasn’t the beans that my choosy tongue was looking for.
At exactly 8:17 am we left the terminal. We are officially in our adventure! Suddenly, my head felt the twirling and whirling of the world. Calm. Relax. It’s been years since I had my boat ride. Maybe I should spend time at ease. Time: 10:31 am; Where: Tadpole shaped island, Corregidor
Like what oldies always said about kissing the ground when you stepped an island or any place for the first time, well, that was exactly what I want to do but I did not. Shouting is way better even if people around you get pissed off because of your over reaction.
There were eight tramvia that will take you to Corregidor’s history spots. We chose number 4. Why four? Hmm, lovers always choose number 4. Kuya Carlos was our tour guide - small, slightly baldy, funny, and yet small. Luckily we rode a tramvia that was wheeled by the best tramvia driver in the whole island, Mang Oscar; he just got his license the day before our tour.
According to our guide, the middle side barracks was the reason why the fall of Bataan happened in year 1942. Corregidor depended mostly on their water supply on Bataan, an idea of disguising these supplies into a tennis court. It was then that Japanese discovered where Filipinos and Americans hid these supplies because in the Second World War, Japan was the only country who produces cement; spying was the skill Japanese are good at — these were delivered to United States and were used in building of the barracks in Corregidor.
As a defense, the battery gears where used to destroy Japan’s attempted landings in Corregidor. Most of the fortifications protect the island from enemies, who the only goal was to capture the rest of the land and the whole country.
“Sleep, my sons, your duty done, for Freedom’s light has come; sleep in the silent depths of the sea, or in your bed of hallowed sod, until you hear at dawn the low, clear reveille of God”
The Pacific War Memorial is the symbol of the Filipino and Americans who took part in the war and fought for victory. The main attraction of the dome is the memorial altar in a circular shape. According to our guide, every May 6th of the year, a light falls in the altar during the hours of daylight. From the Eternal Flame of Freedom steel, it gave us an awe-inspiring 360 degrees view of Manila Bay, shore of Cavite and cape of Bataan. A monument that reminds every Filipinos the hopes, sacrifices, and desires of all men who struggled and fought for freedom.
Afternoon came, we watched the unpredictable drama of the sunset. It was our first time to watch wholly the sun going into rest. As regal as she always was, she gave me hopes of the things that can be experienced in my journey, our journey. A feeling that was so desirable that you wanted the sun not to leave and should always stay but still no matter what happen its radiance will led us in a more possibilities and chances. All you have to do is to feel the trust of what in store with this little star.

Evening tour came, we visited the Army Hospital. The hospital was built in 1912, and unfortunately was ruined during the war. From the outside, goose bumps were running in my veins, cold feet that signals me that there were unknown spirits walking with us. With a crossed shaped structure that can be viewed when you are 500 meters way up from where you are standing. We took pictures in the hospital’s morgue, which according to Bryan [our tour guide when after six came] you can capture an encircled something anywhere the room. Orbs can be seen in your ever dependable cameras [speaking of digital cam " Thank you so much Jose the fourth!]. We took few of that ’something’. Shivers. Thank goodness, my Honey Koko is such a William Turner to the rescue when I feel like shaking.
Our last tour that day happened in Malinta Tunnel. During the construction of the tunnel, workers named it ‘malinta’ [many leeches] because there are countless leeches appeared in the tunnel’s formation. Our guide explained every lateral of the tunnel. Same as I have experienced in the hospital, this was a less hair raising, eerie feeling. This can be considered as a mysterious and strange tour yet can give you a sense of adventure that it could send a cold chill in your spine, well it happened to me.
After a tiring day, we had a quick dinner then off to massage! A good massage for a good sleep
Time: 4:45 am; Where: Two one four
Next day came, with my sleepy eyes wanted not to see the sun rays touching my skin. But still, thanks to my Honey Koko who patiently pulled me off to bed, “Good morning sunshine…” he said. Just in time to ride the tramvia, so sleepy and so tired and I even forgot to tie my hair. Messy hair in the morning was one of my favorite look.
After the thirty minutes of sitting, clicking and waiting, there I saw my sun shines. So beautiful, so stunning yet shy. New day, new chances, it opens my Pandora’s Box. Every glimmer it brings, it gives life to my skin. Hopes and wishes granted. Its rays are running after my lips, so keen to touch my morning breath. My sunshine. Our last stop would be the Spanish Lighthouse. We saw the spectacular view of the island, South China Sea, Cavite, Bataan and Manila Bay. We still have five hours of rest until we need to leave the island. Aww.

Pity me, in my secondary years I did not pay much attention in my history class. I should have listened. It gave me a bunch of chills as if I were in the war scene while having the tour. You can still feel the courage and the cry for freedom of all the men who fought; the passion of bravery and the blood sacrificed while you were in the island. They were the reason why I am where I am standing. Inspirations to never give up and to value the right spread our wings. This tour can be considered as entertaining, adventurous, a feel of horror, and much of the history.
In my next visit, perhaps I will be bringing my Mamoi and Papoi [Fact: my Papoi is a patriot]. Or my little hopes running and screaming aloud. ‘Til our next escapade. Wonder where it would be. Doesn’t matter, my head say.
